Sewage Backup Due to Toilet Blockage
Sewage, or blackwater, is waste materials that are deposited into the septic tank or a sewerage system. These wastes come from the home itself, from human excretions to discarded food and liquids. When deposited into the sewerage system, it can come into contact with other waste materials and mix with a variety of harmful bacteria and even toxic chemicals.
One problem that homeowners face occasionally is sewage backup from a clogged toilet. The house's drainage system is an interconnected system of pipes that goes out into the sewage system or septic tank. If the sewage backup is occurring in the toilet alone, while other drains and pipes are functioning normally, the clogging could be isolated in the toilet's drainage pipework. Before calling for the big guns in solving this problem, unclogging the toilet and stopping the sewage backup can be resolved by a few simple procedures that homeowners could employ
Some of the causes of toilet clogging could be attributed to hardened waste materials that got jammed in the pipework. If this is the case, simple methods could be used to dissolve and remove this clog. However, remember to wear gloves while attempting these procedures of sewage backup removal.
The first step is to remove any excess water from the bowl and keep it to a minimum. You can use a manual toilet bowl pump and try removing the clog by the simple suction action from this tool. If this is not effective even after several attempts, pour in a mixture of 1-cup salt and 1-cup of baking soda. Allow this solution to settle in for 30 minutes or more, and then pour a gallon of boiling water. Another alternative mixture is 1-cup baking soda mixed with 1-cup white vinegar. These chemicals would react and form bubbles. When this is evident, pour in 1 gallon of boiling water. Follow through with the juice of one whole lemon. Wait for one to two hours before testing. There are also de-clogging chemicals available that are just poured into the bowl and allowed to settle for a few hours. This method may be effective in stopping the source of the sewage backup.
There are cases however, where solid items were flushed accidentally into the toilet that can cause the clog. Examples are small children's toys, which cannot be dissolved by the simple methods mentioned earlier. In such cases, removing this cause for sewage backup may require the help of a plumber. However, if the owner is capable, he can perform toilet repair himself and remove that clog.
If attempting sewage backup removal on your own due to this type of clogging, it is again reiterated to wear protective clothing. Spills and overflows might also occur, so it is best to have absorbent material around the toilet so the wastewater would not contaminate the area further.
The toilet needs to be separated into its two sections. The first one is the tank where the flush water is stored. Remove water inside the tank first then detach by removing the installation screws. The second part is the base or the bowl itself. Some of the blockage usually occurs in the curved ducting in the lower portion of the toilet base. A plumber's snake can be used to dislodge the item causing the clog. If this is not available, a strong GI wire with an improvised hooked tip can be used to remove the object. If these efforts are not successful, the blockage could already be in the drainage pipeworks that goes to the septic tank. This will already need professional help and should be looked into right away.
Sewage damage is an unpleasant occurrence that homeowners may face. It should be addressed properly and immediately to restore normal conditions for the occupants of the affected home.
